ABOUT OUR DISTRICT Mission Statement The mission of Bath Central School District is to provide a safe, experience-rich environment which will enable each individual to reach his/her potential as a competent, confident, and contributing citizen - a lifelong learner in our changing society. Vernon E. Wightman Primary School The Vernon E. Wightman Primary School provides instructional programs for children from Pre-Kindergarten through third grade and current enrollment is approximately 700 students. The one story structure lends itself comfortably to encompassing residential area. Landscaped acreage provides a pleasant setting for the necessary playgrounds and ball fields. The successful development of this area was the result of a cooperative effort between the community and the school district. A new addition has enlarged the current facility by eight classrooms. Educationally, the school features academic programs ranging from a mathematics program from Pre-Kindergarten through Third grade, an Early Literacy Profile a balanced literacy approach to ELA instruction, and a combination science kit – textbook program. The students also work independently in our Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) Lab in order to enhance their Reading and Math skills. Remedial instruction in reading, mathematics and speech are included. A school wide Character Education Program and Assertive Discipline model provide positive behavior emphasis in order to help maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic success for all students. Dana L. Lyon Elementary School Dana L. Lyon Elementary School provides for the needs of students in grades four and five. Our three hundred students and a staff of thirty are presently located in the top floor of the old Jr.-Sr High School. A major building/expansion project, to be completed in the spring of 2003, will result in grades 4-12 in one educational complex. The Elementary school is now able to take advantage of the advanced technology of wireless labs and computer labs as well as the educational resources of tutoring and mentoring from High school students. The new library offers a pleasant environment for the children to read and learn research skills. An established and ongoing staff development program offers professional training, which insures alignment of local curriculum and instruction with New York State learning standards and assessments. The elementary students are offered educational experiences, which encourage optimal student engagement and success. A hands-on science program and integrated Language Arts program provide highly meaningful and creative learning situations. Exceptional special education and remedial (Title One and Academic Intervention services) are available in order to accommodate varying student learning styles and needs. Services are provided in a variety of methods, including push-in, co-teaching and pull-out models. Numerous extra-curricular and inter scholastic opportunities are offered the elementary students. The Art and ski clubs, and basketball, wrestling, baseball lacrosse and soccer programs are just a few examples. Sunrise Educators provide an opportunity for students to review and practice basic skills. The vocal and instrumental music programs present several occasions for the students to show case their special talents throughout the school year. The Dana L. Lyon Elementary School is proud of its strong sense of school spirit and tradition which enhance the supportive learning climate and proactive community involvement; it remains committed to excellence in education and the promotion of life long learning and good citizenship. Haverling Middle School The current Middle School structure consists of grades six, seven and eight with 480 students. The Middle School employs a “team concept” of teaching. This allows for interdisciplinary projects for students and team planning time for teachers. The curriculum and assessments have been and are being developed to meet the New York State Learning Standards in all academic areas. Our Middle School Guidance program consists of career counseling and academic counseling, i.e. study skills, time management. The Middle School offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as Color Guard, Peer Mediation, Future Teachers, and a variety of Modified Sports teams. The primary focus of the Middle Level program is to develop a well-rounded educational program, providing every student the greatest opportunity for success in high school and our society. Haverling High School Haverling High School offers a comprehensive educational program to approximately 750 students. At Haverling, students are encouraged to follow an academic program that will challenge and expand their interests and goals. Opportunities exist for students of all ability levels. The majority of students with special needs are included in general education classes with appropriate support and interventions to allow for their success in these classes. All students are encouraged to pursue a regent’s course of study at Haverling to whatever extent possible. Advanced placement or ACE courses are offered in every academic discipline. Strong offerings in Art, Music, Business and Technology as well as vocational studies provide for a well-rounded education for all and more detailed study for students with interest in these areas. Haverling works cooperatively with the Career Development Council to structure job partnerships and career exploration Extracurricular experiences available to our students include a full array of athletic teams, a County Championship Academic All Stars Team, Instrumental and Vocal Music programs, Drama Club, Student Government and Project Care to mention a few. The High School teachers who provide the educational challenges at this level work diligently to ensure our program is aligned with State Standards and Assessments. A hybrid Block Schedule is utilized which enhances the structure of the school day so students may apply knowledge of brain-based research in the most beneficial manner possible.

v Countywide preschool, early intervention and special education programs are housed in the district. v Universal Pre-Kindergarten, Begindergarten, and Pre-First Grade is available for the students who need the extra help to prepare them for a positive beginning to their educational career. v All classrooms have access to the Internet. Totally involved computer-training programs for business where students acquire entry-level employment skills. v A well-developed Computer-Aided Design (CAD) program provides training for employment and college preparation. v Advanced Placement college level courses in English, Economics, Calculus, Government, French, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science. v Many excellent extra-curricular activities for school clubs and sports for all individuals. v The school is the “community center” as many organizations hold activities in the buildings. The Community of Bath Bath Central Schools, commonly known as Haverling, is located in the village of Bath, New York, which, as the most centrally located point in Steuben County, is the county seat, with a population of 6000. Haverling has 150 teachers for its 2100 students. The county covers some 1,409 square miles, including the southern area of the Finger Lake waters of Keuka Lake and is home to some 99,088 residents. Located within easy travel distance of Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Ithaca, Elmira and Binghamton, Bath’s villagers enjoy the residential life of the rural area as well as the day to day hubbub of county governmental activities.
